A spill kit locked in a storeroom is not much help when diesel is tracking across a workshop floor or hydraulic oil is running towards a drain. When asking where should spill kits go, use one practical rule: place them where a spill is most likely to start or spread, and where workers can reach them in seconds without crossing the spill.
For most Australian workplaces, that means more than one kit. A vehicle needs its own compact response kit. A workshop needs a larger, clearly visible kit near fluid-handling work. Sites with drains, bulk storage or loading areas need extra equipment positioned to protect those high-consequence points quickly.
Where Should Spill Kits Go on Your Site?
Start with the path a leak would take. Look at where liquids are delivered, stored, transferred, used and disposed of. Then identify nearby drains, doorways, ramps and traffic routes. These are the places where a minor leak can become an operational clean-up, an environmental incident or a slip hazard.
A kit should be visible, unobstructed and close enough for immediate access. Do not hide it behind pallets, stack materials in front of it or position it where a forklift, parked ute or loaded trolley routinely blocks it. Mark the location clearly, keep the access path open and make sure every shift knows where it is.
Workshops and maintenance bays
Mechanical workshops are common spill points because oils, coolants, fuels, brake fluids and solvents are handled daily. Position a main kit near the work bays, but outside the area most likely to be blocked by vehicles or exposed to welding and grinding work.
A central 120L or 240L wheelie-bin-style kit often suits a busy workshop, particularly where several bays are active. For a smaller workshop, a 50L or 80L kit may be enough if it is supported by replacement pads and absorbent socks. Warehouses, loading docks and dispatch areas
At a loading dock, leaks can come from damaged cartons, drums, IBC valves, forklift punctures or freight arriving with a compromised package. Put a kit near the dock doors or despatch office, with clear access from both the warehouse floor and the loading area.
If dangerous goods are received or stored, match the kit to the materials on site. A general purpose kit is useful for common non-aggressive liquids such as coolants, water-based fluids and some oils. A chemical or hazchem kit is the safer choice where acids, caustics, solvents or unknown liquids may be involved. For service vans and field crews, position the kit where it can be removed without unloading tools. A kit buried under parts, cones and toolboxes may as well not be there. Check it during vehicle inspections and replace used pads, socks, bags and PPE straight after an incident.
Larger mobile plant may need more than a small bag. Excavators, trucks, generators and agricultural equipment can release significant volumes of hydraulic oil or diesel. Put Spill Kits Near Drains, Not Just Liquids
The nearest drain often determines the real consequence of a spill. A small leak in an isolated corner may be manageable with a few pads. The same leak on a sloped hardstand beside a stormwater grate can require immediate containment, drain protection and a larger recovery effort.
Keep drain covers, absorbent socks and containment equipment near known drainage points. Do not store drain protection in a distant office or chemical store. The first person responding needs to be able to block the drain while another worker controls the source and applies absorbent.
This is especially relevant for loading yards, wash bays, fuel areas, workshops with roller doors, external chemical stores and temporary civil worksites. Rain can move contamination fast, so a drain location that seems low-risk on a dry day can become critical during wet weather.

A spill kit’s position and capacity should work together. Use the likely spill volume, the liquid type and the time it would take to bring additional supplies to the area. A compact kit is ideal for quick first response, but it will not replace a site kit where drums, tanks or high-volume machinery are involved.

Workers do not need lengthy theory to begin a safe response, but they do need to know the first actions: protect themselves, stop the source if safe, keep people clear, protect drains, contain the spill and report it according to site procedure.
A simple check after every use prevents the most common readiness failure — an empty kit left in place. Nominate a person to inspect contents regularly and after any incident. Replace consumed absorbents promptly rather than waiting for the next stocktake.

Another mistake is placing every kit beside the chemical store. Chemicals may be stored there, but spills can happen at the receiving dock, in a vehicle, on the workshop floor or during waste transfer. Put equipment at the work point, then keep additional stock centrally for replenishment.
Finally, do not mix up kit types. Oil and fuel absorbents are highly effective on hydrocarbons and useful around water, while chemical kits are designed for a broader range of hazardous liquids. General purpose absorbents are flexible for routine workplace fluids, but they are not automatically the right answer for every substance.
